 Job Description


The incumbent serves as a the Locally Employed (LE) Staff medical practitioner to provide medical services (i.e., diagnosis and treatment of patients) to employees and dependents of direct-hire American employees of the Mission Gaborone eligible for Health Unit (HU) services.  This may include referral of more complicated cases/situations to appropriate outside resources.  The incumbent supervises members of the Health staff and performs other professional duties not involving patient care such as medication ordering and medical education.  The incumbent reports to the Management Officer (MO) for administrative matters and the Regional Medical Office (RMO) for medical/clinical issues.

Qualifications and Evaluations




A doctorate in medicine (MD) and at least one year of primary care internship from a recognized U.S., Canadian or western medical school; and/or a MD with at least one year of primary care and acceptable practice experience and references as reviewed and approved by RMO.



At least 2 years of clinical experience post-education is required.




Good working knowledge of the local medical system and facilities. 





Level IV (Fluent) speaking/reading/writing of English is required.




Must be sensitive to the needs and feeling of the others.  Must be approachable and personable to obtain and maintain the trust and confidence of employees and their dependents.  Must be mature, stable, objective, resourceful, adaptable, and possess sound professional judgment.   Must be flexible and able to learn from Department of State procedures.  


Local prescriptive privileges must be acquired.  All applicants under consideration will be required to pass medical and security certifications.

The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given. 

** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with

re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
